What’s in a Domain Name?
Monday, September 5th, 2005It used to be that you would want your domain name to reflect your business or web site focus. Indeed, it’s know that having your search keyword(s) in your domain can improve your rankings in the search engine results. It has been argued recently, however, that now days a more unique domain name is better. Google.com, for example (non-sensical but unique and now immediately identifiable), rather than ‘worldsgreatestsearchengine.com’.
I fall into the later and only by chance. Belchfire.net was not my first choice for a domain name, but as it turns out, worked out well. It’s unique and as an added bonus, tends to show up near the top of any directory or links index that list sites alphabetically. Nothing new there - that’s been done for years to get listed first in things like the yellow pages (think AAA Towing, for example).
Something to consider if you’re thinking of registering a domain name for yourself or your business. A domain name based on a product, service or trademark, rather than the company or organization name, is also a good choice and should do you well.
